Chaffey College Main Instruction Building - Chino, CA
The Main Instruction Building is the first building and keystone of the new 100 acre Chino Campus of Chaffey College. The building is arranged on two floors around two courtyards--a south courtyard facing the Chino Hills and a north courtyard facing the San Gabriel Mountains. The two floors are designed to optimize flexibility and adaptability over time as the College grows. The building's sustainable features are rooted in the tradition of Spanish Colonial architecture as it developed in this region. Thick walls, shaded loggias, natural materials and lightly colored surfaces emulate characteristics of the mission, hacienda and farm buildings of early California. These features and others create an authentic, effortlessly sustainable, and contemporary architecture suitable to its time and rooted in its place. Light, cool, open, and flexible, interiors of the building facilitate the dynamic, ever-changing pedagogy, programs, and services that are the lifeblood of a community college.
