The State of California has mandated the inclusion of “pre-“ or “transitional” (TK) kindergarten students on all public school campuses. The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is busily accommodating this requirement at all of its elementary school campuses. At Grant, four existing general purpose classrooms at the front of campus have been renovated into three TK classrooms adjacent to the suite of existing kindergarten classrooms. The renovation includes new restrooms and support spaces, a play yard and new HVAC system. The Department of State Architects (DSA) required an Evaluation Design and Criteria Report (EDCR) assessed the 1954-built building and designs to then allow for the relocation of interior shear walls in the transverse direction, removal of existing and installation of new partition and ceilings as well as the accommodation of new openings in existing walls.
